1. Dreamscape Unveiled

Media: Crayon on Paper.

Dimensions: A4, 210mm × 297mm

This crayon painting symbolizes the process of recalling dreams and exploring the subconscious. Using a double-layer technique, vibrant colors lie hidden beneath a black crayon surface, with dreamlike scenarios revealed by etching with a toothpick. I combined different dreams, such as hiking in the nature, flying in the sky, and struggling with exams in the classroom, onto the same page.

This drawing approach echoes the therapeutic process of uncovering hidden memories and emotions, fostering imagination and self-reflection. The artwork demonstrates how creative expression can lead to emotional exploration and healing.

3. Scent to Color – A Synesthetic Practice

Media: Watercolor on paper, aroma oils

Dimensions: 130mm × 190mm

I’m interested in aromas and would apply for relaxing on occasions. This sample explores the concept of synesthesia by translating the sensations of different aromas into visual forms. Inspired by aromatherapy, the paintings capture the emotional tone and colors associated with a specific scent mix, creating a sensory bridge between smell and sight.

The painting process practices my sensory awareness, strengthening the connection with emotions and deepening self-awareness through multisensory expression.

Dimensions: 297mm × 420mm

This oil painting depicts a vibrant tree in a wetland near my hometown. It stands out with its striking mix of colors of yellow, orange, and green against a backdrop of ordinary foliage. Its distinctiveness draws admiration from visitors and serves as a powerful symbol of diversity and individuality.

Through this artwork, I reflect on embracing uniqueness and celebrating differences—both in nature and as human beings. 5. Roots and Growth

Media: Watercolor sketches on paper

Dimensions: 210mm × 297mm, 130mm × 190mm

These sketches capture snapshots from my hometown, a tranquil tourist town in eastern China known for its natural beauty and historical values. The pictures present a famous tourist spot and the joyful moments of farmers harvesting persimmons in autumn. As an observer, I reconnected with where I grew up, rediscovering its charm and the memories that shaped my identity.

Through this practice, I reflected on the significance of finding beauty in daily life and drawing strength from one’s surroundings and connections. This art project focuses on self-reflection and empowerment, demonstrating how creative expression can foster a deeper connection to one’s roots and inspire personal growth.

6. Colors of Resilience

Media: Watercolor sketches on paper

Dimensions: A4, 210mm × 297mm

I captured some vibrant colors of women figures encountered during my travels in Daliangshan and Northern Shanxi. I want to present the cultural richness and their resilience.

For example, in Daliangshan, Yi ethnic women wear traditional clothing with bold and intricate patterns, elaborate headpieces, and jewelry. Although they live in economically disadvantaged and remote areas, these women still pursue beauty and have a strong cultural identity.

The painting process helps me reflect on how social contexts would shape our identity and appreciate cultural diversity. It reminds me of the importance of cultural sensitivity when providing social services for our clients.

7. Seats of Belonging

Media: Soft Clay Sculptures

Dimensions: Variable

This project features soft clay sculptures designed as unique and comfortable “seats” for diverse seeds: a hand-shaped chair for bergamot, a small boat for acorns, and a turtle couch for garlic. Through the process, I learned how to respect individuality and design bespoke supportive strategies.

The sample aims to celebrate diversity and inclusivity, and foster a sense of belonging. I want to demonstrate how creative expression can create spaces that meet bespoke needs and provide safety and comfort.

8. Keep Arts Happening – Geospatial Analysis of Arts Education Accessibility

Dimensions: Variable

This project explores the accessibility of arts education for children and youth in St. Louis through GIS mapping and socioeconomic analysis. By visualizing resource disparities, it highlights the need for equitable access to creative opportunities and emphasizes the role of the arts in fostering emotional resilience and community well-being.

I employed GIS techniques, and synthesized findings into a visual report to advocate for resource equity. The study reflects my belief in art’s transformative power to heal, connect, and inspire—core principles I aim to integrate into art therapy practice.

9. Street Photography

Media: Photography

Dimensions: Variable

Street photography offers an opportunity to observe environments and human interactions. These sample photos are from different places, including Da Liangshan, Guizhou Province and Serbia.

By recording the dynamics of daily life, I immerse myself in the context and sharpen my eyes for details and beauty. Through photography, I document what I witness while simultaneously opening up myself to interact with the external world. From initial shyness and timidity to friendly communication with subjects, I’ve learned to observe through an empathetic and sincere lens.

I will continue improving my visual language skills to record and reveal different stories for overlooked corners.

The night photography samples capture the quiet scenery of daily life after dark, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow that transforms familiar spaces. Taken in various places, including Shanghai, Beijing, Harbin, and St. Louis, these images explore the emotional atmosphere of nighttime and present the interaction between people and the environment.

Night photos capture various emotions, such as happiness, loneliness, nostalgia, or just a projection of my feelings. By practicing controlling light through a camera lens, I also learned how to reexamine the environment, create emotional connections with surroundings, and foster introspection through visual storytelling.
